World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day

In 2009, the UN General Assembly established a memorable day – World Oceans Day. The idea of such event appeared in 1992. Then, in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, an international summit on environment and development was organized.

The motto of the summit – "Our last chance to save the planet" – reflected the current environmental problems in the world and the need of their solution as well as possible. The preservation of the natural environment on which humanity acts usually in fatal way has become a global policy and nowadays touches every state and every individual.

Over 70 % of the Earth's surface is covered by the oceans, which scientists are divided into four large oceans: Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and the Arctic. The oceans contain 96 % of the total stock of water in the world, and these waters are one of the main absorbers of carbon dioxide and a home for many species of marine flora and fauna. Caring about the ocean serves as an obstacle to the extinction of many plants and animals, protects their rights and stable environmental conditions.

8th of June is celebrated annually by all who’s even the most distantly related to the oceans. In Mexico, the shores of which are washed by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, on this day special presentation directed to introduce the people with the problems of the ocean and to help to decide them are arranged in aquariums and dolphinariums, in schools situated on the shores of oceans the environmental raids are organized. Children collect garbage carried out by the waves on the shore, watch the birds and animals, whose life is impossible without oceans.

A program aimed at preserving of marine species, primarily sea turtles, exists in Mexico too. On special farms Mexicans are trying to create the best possible conditions for the reproduction of these animals. All along the coast, in places of natural nesting, the members of environmental organizations observe the egg laying, wall them, trying to protect from natural enemies. The day, when the baby turtles are released into the ocean, becomes an unforgettable event for locals and tourists on the Mexican coast. All the coastal hotels have the information about the dates of such events.
