Description

The Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, or "open-air museum in Pirohiv" is located in the southern outskirts of Kiev, near the village of Pirohiv, and covers an area of 133.5 hectares. It was founded in 1969 and today is actually Ukraine in miniature, as the artifacts of all its regions are represented on its territory with documentary authenticity.

Here you will find more than 300 artifacts collected throughout the country. The center of the exhibition is a group of windmills located on a hill. The museum is divided into sectors, each of which represents the folk architecture and life of some Ukrainian regions: the Middle Dnieper, Poltava and Sloboda Ukraine, Polesia, Podolia, southern Ukraine, the Carpathians. A visit to Pirohiv is a unique opportunity to go through all the most interesting corners of Ukraine for a day's sightseeing, literally to see inside the life of the Ukrainian people in the XVII-XX centuries, to familiarize you with the ordinary household items of Ukrainian house. On the territory of the museum one can often meet the people and workers in the national costumes, occupied with the different crafts of the time − weavers, potters and others. The walking to the accompaniment of Ukrainian folk music is something special and gives you an unforgettable experience.

The museum is also a place to relax. Here you can ride horses, dine in many restaurants (tavern, eating-house, kulishnytsya) with Ukrainian borscht, varenyks or lard. During the Ukrainian national holidays the special theatrical performances are made at the museum: dancing around the campfire, singing.
