On February 27, 1844 the independence of the Dominican Republic was proclaimed, as a result of the war for the independence, - the republic has separated from Haiti.

The penultimate day of February is a national holiday in the Dominican Republic. It is celebrated with military parades, festive events in schools and universities of the country.

Dominicans remember with gratitude Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and Ramon Matias Mella for their struggle for freedom of all the Dominican people.

Every year on February 27, the President of the Dominican Republic make a report for the country about the last year of his government.
