Description

The resort of Puerto Plata is situated in the north-east of the island, 250 km from Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic. The city was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus and now Puerto Plata fascinates visitors by a harmonious combination of colonial, Victorian and modern architecture. The nature of this area is very different from the nature of Punta Cana; you can enjoy the amazing mountain scenery, golden beaches and restive sea ideal for windsurfing.

Another name of this place is "Amber Coast" or, as it is called by Dominicans, "The coast of amber". Here black amber is found abundantly. Gorgeous beaches, the water, which shimmers with a numerous shades of turquoise, lush vegetation and humid tropical climate, softened by winds of the Atlantic − all of these benefits have turned the amber coast to a place of mass tourism.

We recommend that you dilute the beach vacation in Puerto Plata with a visit to the local sights: the church where the first Mass in America was held, the ruins of the house of Columbus, the fort and the church of San Felipe, the Fortaleza lighthouse, Brugal distillery. And fans of museum tours can explore the rich collections of the Museum of Indians of Taino and the Amber Museum.
