The Sunday, mentioned in the name of the city, is considered to be the day of his birth. Santo Domingo was the starting point of all Spanish expeditions which steered a course towards America. Ozama River divides the city into two parts: the western, which is a center of business and culture of the capital, and the eastern – historic part. Colonial zone with the houses of Victorian style and tree-lined streets will take you to a few centuries ago, into the wonderful atmosphere of a fairy tale. You will feel like a member of the royal family, who arrived from the mainland to view his possessions.

It is worth to visit the Fort San Diego, the palace Alcazar de Colon ("The Fortress of Columbus"), the Fort Concepcion, the Casa de Bastidas ("Captain's Palace") and the Casa de Ovando, the first stone house Casa del Cordon ("The House of Medal Ribbon"), the Casa del Duarte and the Casa Borgelia, the fortress La Fortaleza, an ensemble of colonial buildings Atarazana and the oldest paved street of the New World − Calle de las Damas.

The National Palace − the place of sessions of the government, the Columbus Lighthouse − a symbol of the city where a mausoleum with the remains of Columbus is accommodated stagger the imagination too, as well as numerous museums, able to interest to even the most demanding tourist and to give a pleasant coolness on a hot sunny day.

Anyone who thinks that Santo Domingo owes its unrivaled charm to only distant past is deeply mistaken. Santo Domingo is a young city, bustling and full of life, of fun and surprises. National Aquarium is a truly unique show. Going through the transparent corridor between the walls of the aquarium, you will feel immersed into the underwater kingdom, inhabited by a variety of multi-colored fish species. Botanical Garden will give you the same strong impression. It’s a green oasis in the center of the modern city, breathing with odors of more than 300 species of orchids and recreating all the natural areas of the tropics. Don’t forget to visit the Japanese Garden. Mirador del Sur Park is a popular place of townspeople for hiking and making picnics on outdoor air. At night everyone gather in the park at the disco, which is arranged in the famous cave of Taino Indians, adorned with lots of stalactites and stalagmites.
