Tikal
Today the village and its outskirts are known to archaeologists all around the world by the name of Tikal. Dozens of majestic stone pyramids and sumptuous palaces crowned the titanic work of many generations of mysterious people, which for 1,500 years was creating this architectural ensemble. In the X century unknown natural disaster made the Indians to stop their work and to leave the flourishing city. However, for many centuries it served as the place of holding of the religious rites of tribes that lived in the Yucatan.
Today Tikal is the National Park with the area of about 60 km2, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the main attraction of Guatemala. It was set up in the impassable jungle, which is currently thinned and turned into a nature reserve. Many pyramids of the park were built from 700 to 800 BC; the largest of them rises for 70 meters. There are small pyramids, palaces and houses of nobility, steles, altars and stadiums to play ball. There are no more cities of the Maya with structural elements and decorative solid wood with excellent carving so well preserved.
This amazing monument of Mayas today is turned into a haven for archaeologists and one of the most attractive objects of tourism. Here you will feel the power of an ancient civilization on the Seven Temples Square; you’ll visit the museum and admire a variety of animal and bird kingdom of tropics.
