Description

Pisco is a port city in south-central Peru, located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, about 234 miles south of the capital, and 15 km to the north of the Paracas Reserve. Founded in 1640, it was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami in 1687. After reconstruction Pisco was an important trading port in the region, through which the goods such as guano, mercury and agricultural products were exported.

Thanks the vineyards located near the town a strong alcoholic drink of the same name pisco, which has worldwide recognition, is produced here. Grape brandy pisco, a national drink and a symbol of the country in the international market, today is a product of the highest quality, which is due to all of its long history. Grape brandy from Peru has quickly gained recognition and its export increased.

The main square of Pisco is a favorite place for ambles of its residents. Lots of interesting buildings surround the square with a monument of Jose de San Martin, the head of the first government of Peru, in the center, including the mansion of San Martin and Municipal Palace. Wonderful baroque church, which previously adorned the area, was destroyed in the earthquake.

In the outscirts of Pisco the eco-tourism is well developed, near it the Paracas National Reserve is located with its magnificent coastal scenery and the Ballestas Islands, the home of sea lions, seals, penguins and numerous birds.

The geoglyph Chandelier of Paracas is also located near Pisco. It is alike figures on the Nazca, its length is 128 m, and width − about 74. The origin and authenticity of the geoglyph are not clear. According to one version it was created by order of San Martin, one of the leaders of the war for independence of the Spanish colonies in Latin America and is a Masonic symbol. According to the other, the geoglyph is a reference point for sailors.
