Founded in 1496 by Bartolommeo Columbus, the brother of the famous Christopher Columbus, the city was originally given the name of New Isabella. Only a short time later the capital of the Dominican Republic was renamed as Santo Domingo, which translated from Spanish means "Holy Sunday".
