Underwater Museum
Cancun Underwater Museum was founded in 2009 and since attracts more and more tourists. It is situated between the shores of Cancun and Women Island in a natural area, which is protected by the Federal Government of Mexico. The museum is divided into two galleries; you can visit them with the equipment for diving or snorkeling.
Museum director is Jason Taylor, a British artist; he is also the author of about 500 sculptures presented there. He models their faces straight off the faces of ordinary Mexicans, among who lives in recent years. Sculptures are made of environmentally friendly materials, mainly of concrete. According to the author, they are intended to preserve the underwater flora and fauna. A variety of corals already has started to grow and fish, crabs, shrimp grow roots here.
The production of the most part of sculptures was funded by Mexican authorities, concerned about environmental problems and the load to the unique coral reef near Cancun. The figures are set on a depth of 10 m on the seabed, not too deep to anyone could get them with scuba or mask.
The museum exposition is called "Silent Evolution" and tells the story of humankind from ancient civilizations to the present day.
